Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2 includes children in Years 3-6 (Age 7-11). At All Saints’ this includes children in Sedgewell Cove, Butter Cove and Bantham Classes.



  • Speaking and listening (speaking, listening, group discussion and interaction, drama, standard English and language variation)
  • Reading (reading strategies, understanding texts, reading for information, literature, non-fiction and non-literary texts and language structure and variation)
  • Writing (composition, planning and drafting, correct grammar including punctuation, spelling, handwriting and presentation, standard English and language structure)



  • Number (using and applying number, numbers and the number system, calculations, solving numerical problems)
  • Shape, space and measures (using and applying shape, space and measures, understanding properties of shape, understanding properties of position and movement and understanding measure)
  • Handling data (using and applying handling data, processing, representing and interpreting data)



  • Scientific enquiry (ideas and evidence in science and investigative skills)
  • Life processes and living things (life processes, humans and other animals, green plants, variation and classification and living things in their environment)
  • Materials and their properties (grouping and classifying materials, changing materials and separating mixtures of materials)
  • Physical processes (electricity, forces and motion, light and sound and the Earth and beyond)

Physical education

  • Through dance, games and gymnastic activities – swimming activities and water safety are non-statutory during Key Stage 2 unless the programme of study has already been completed during Key Stage Acquiring and developing skills

Religious education

  • Content is determined by the Diocese and Governors. Content covers learning about religions and learning from religions
